Our Cages
More than 50% of our cages are critter nations. We like the space it provides, easy to clean, and it has narrow bar spacing making it appropriate for all ages.
For our expecting mothers, we either move them into a critter nation suite, or offer them a long style cage. It depends on the age and temperament of the mother.
Our baby rats love the critter nation style cages. Once they start leaving the nest, around 15 days or so, after there eyes have opened, until they are ready for departure to their new homes, this cage teaches them:
- How to give each other space
- How to navigate floors
- How to climb
- Plenty of toys or tubes to play with
- Hammocks and fall breakers (rat catchers) galore.
This isn’t just a cage for the babies, it’s an opportunity for growth and discovery.
All Our Other Cages:
- Have bars covered for feet
- Have at least one hammock
- Include nesting materials, such as shredded construction paper
- Blankets and tray liners for comfort
WE DO NOT USE ANY WOOD CHIPS. Only wood toys!
Enrichment
Is very important to us!!! We make a lot of our own small animal toys, and encourage others to try making some for their pet rats as well! It can be affordable, fun, and the rats always seem to appreciate that it is homemade. Check out our website for ideas: arattoy.com
If you are interested in making your own toys, we also offer parts to make your own rat toys at: rattoyparts.com

Our cages include, but are not limited to:
- Rat Safe Running Wheels
- Ladders
- Ropes
- Wooden Toys
- Enrichment items like Sola Balls and Sweet Bamboo Chews
- Hammocks – soft and hard
- Hideaways
Bonding
First off, these are pets. They are loved and cared for. We make sure that our rats have rat companionship by bonding them together. Our females that breed, live together. Our male studs, stay together in a cage. If we have a new comer, we may introduce them immediately to another rat depending on the emotional need of the rat. This isn’t to say quarantine isn’t a concern, but often we put the emotional needs of the rats first.

Comfort
All of our rats are treated like royalty staying in a hotel. They are provided fresh bedding such as hammocks and tray liners, as needed.
Our cages are cleaned out routinely. With a deep clean once a week. Including replacing or washing hideaways, bedding, and bowls.
We keep up with the mess throughout the week by spot cleaning and using litter boxes. Every single one of our cages includes a litter box, and pee rock. This encourages even the smallest of rats to be more hygienic.

Care
Handled with love and joy, we know these are empathic creatures. So we only bring the good vibes into the Rattery. It is a safe haven for rats to feel welcome and loved.
Each rat is handled daily. Each cage is spot cleaned and I will mingle with the cage mates. I check on them several times a day, as it is in the center of my house.
If strange sounds appear, I dash into the room to check on everybody. There isn’t a moment that goes by these rats are not being cared for.
Free roam time is allowed for rats old enough not to fit through the bars of the cages, often we rotate the rats free time roam in the room. And they love it!
Cleaning products we have used:
- Vinegar and Water Solution
- Vinegar
- Bleach 1:10 solution
- Bleach 1:7 solution (for most extreme cases)

Love
We are dedicated to finding these rats loving families excited to care for rats! We are not here to adopt rats to just anybody, but only to those who seek their true companionship and wellbeing.
Rats are wonderful little beings, capable of sharing emotions and their happiness with you. They make wonderful pets, as they’re playful and have their snuggle moments. We love our rats, and only seek the best outcome for each one.
